2026 Outlook:
William Morris returns as the defending Class C state champion and enters his senior year as the clear favorite to repeat. He won the regional title and dominated at states in 2025. His combination of strength and closing speed makes him extremely difficult to beat in championship races. After winning the Class C South Regional and Class C State Championship last fall, Morris should be aiming not only to repeat in Class C, but also to contend for the top overall spot in the state.

2026 Outlook:
Atticus Merriam has a legit claim at the top spot. His outdoor track season was elite and he is coming off of a dominant win at the Beach to Beacon High School Mile. If he can turn his track speed and strength into another step forward on the cross country course, Merriam will be a serious Class A title contender and one of the favorites in any race he enters.

Samuel Bergmark dominated the Class A North, winning the regional title, and followed it with a strong 3rd at states. His 15:57 5K is the best in the state. As a senior he should be a strong contender for the Class A state title and repeat as North regional champion.

Isaac Pelletier is a proven championship performer and one of the top returners in Class A South. His State meet finish and 1600m PR put him among the top runners in the state. If he can close the gap to the very top group, he could be a podium contender in Class A.

2026 Outlook:
Ryan Bolduc is one of the biggest wildcards in the rankings. Ryan Bolduc enters his senior year with exceptional track credentials but no cross country experience. The question will be how that translates to the 5K and whether he can handle the demands of a full cross country season. Bolduc has the talent to be one of the top runners in Class A South and potentially much higher than this ranking. His personal bests suggest he has the potential to be a top contender at the state level.

Jackie Chalmers is the top-ranked Class B returner and one of the best underclassmen in the state. Chalmers has already shown he can perform well in big meets, and he should be one of the favorites for the Class B title this season. With another year of development, he could also challenge the top runners across all classes.

2026 Outlook:
Ian Guzman showed he can compete with the best with a 4th-place state finish last year and his presence gives Freeport a strong individual contender at the front of its lineup. Guzman also brings solid middle-distance ability with a 1:59 800m personal best, which should help him in tactical races. He should be a major factor in Class B South and a contender for a top-five finish in Class B.

Alfie Cognata is a strong runner who is one of the top challengers in Class C. His speed makes him especially dangerous if he is close late in a race. If he can make another jump in cross country fitness, Cognata could push for the Class C title.

2026 Outlook:
Jack Scott was the hero for Hampden Academy last fall, running on a sprained ankle at the state meet and finishing just highly enough to get the win for the Broncos.  As a senior, he will look towards adding some individual accolades as well. If Scott can return to his best form when it matters most, he could be one of the top runners in Class A North and a major factor at states.

Bowen Mitchell gives Yarmouth another high-level individual in an already loaded lineup. Mitchell should be one of the top runners in Class B South, and with the Chalmers also near the front, he will have plenty of training partners to help push him toward another big season.

2026 Outlook:
Pierce Gorneault was undefeated throughout much of his freshman season.  He won the FOC freshman race as well as the Class B North regional title.  Gorneault should be the favorite in Class B North and could quickly become a Class B title contender if he continues to progress.

2026 Outlook:
Eli Chalmers is key part of Yarmouth’s outstanding junior class. Chalmers has the speed to finish races well and the cross country résumé to compete near the front in Class B. With multiple Yarmouth runners ranked highly, he should benefit from a strong team environment. If he can move into the top five in Class B, Yarmouth will be almost impossible to beat.

2026 Outlook:
Moore showed great ability in his first XC season, but unfortunately it ended early due to injury.  Before the injury, he was running with the best in the SMAA, so there’s it’s likely that he will be able to do so once again.

2026 Outlook:
Cummings projects to be the top runner for a Gorham team that has their sights set on a state title in 2026.  His consistent high finishes last year bode well for his chances this season.  If Owen can jump into the top 5 at the state meet, he will give the Rams a great chance to win.

2026 Outlook:
Ferrey might have shown the biggest improvement of any runner in 2025.  His freshman year, he finished 43rd at the regional and didn’t qualify for the state meet.  One year later, his PR had improved by 2 minutes and he was a top 10 finisher at the state championship.  Could he make a similar jump to the top of Class B?  I wouldn’t count him out.

Witmer helped lead Houlton to a state title in 2025 and he will look to do so again this season.  This year, he may have his eyes set on some individual accolades.  If he runs to potential, and regional championship could be in his grasp.

Mattson had a standout freshman campaign, including placing in the top 5 in both the regional and the state meet.  He followed that up with a great outdoor track season, running one of the best times for a freshman in the mile that has been seen in Maine in some time.  Expect Gage to be placing even higher this season.

Olins took a big leap forward in 2025, improving his PR by over a minute and becoming a dependable scorer for Portland.  With that experience under his belt and some impact seniors having graduated for the Bulldogs, he will need to develop into a true frontrunner to keep Portland in the title hunt.

Perry had a fantastic junior year in his first season running cross country.  Now, with a teammate ahead of him to push him, don’t be surprised if he takes a leap into the top 10 in Class A.

Lake thrived at the invitationals in 2025, placing well at the Southern Maine Classic and at FOC. Then, on the track, he put together top 10 finishes over 2 miles/3200m in both the winter and spring against Class A competition. He should be in the mix for a top 5 spot in C this year.

Noah Seigh leads a team that has legit title hopes heading into the season.  Breaking 17 minutes as a sophomore is a huge accomplishment, and if he takes another step forward, he could be amongst the top few in Class A himself.

2026 Outlook:
Crider is one of three runners that could lead Gorham this year.  His performance FOC in particular showed an ability to compete with the best. If he stays healthy and packs up with his twin brother Harvey and teammate Owen Cummings, the Rams will be real tough to beat.

#25: Mateo Diaz-Pedrosa – Falmouth (Grade 9)

2026 Outlook:
Diaz-Pedrosa is probably the most intriguing prospect entering the 2026 season.  His track times suggest that he could run with the best in Class A right off the bat. The transition to 5K can be tough for young athletes, but don’t be surprised if he’s in the top 10 in Class A as a freshman.
